“Taitaja” is a Finnish word meaning a person that is skilled or a master of a craft. We chose to call our enterprise this because it reflected our aspirations as craftsmen & artists. Our path is still one of learning and will continue to be so as long as we create by hammer and fire.
Taitaya Forge is a partnership by artist-blacksmiths Luke & Marleena Barran. Our forge is located in the beautiful English countryside, in an old stone barn on the Isle of Wight. We have been working together for over ten years producing metalwork ranging from contemporary jewellery and design, bladesmithing and traditional blacksmithing to historical reproduction work and costume jewelry. We work with silver, iron & steel, gold & copper alike, from the small scale to the large. Our designs, work methods and inspiration come from the natural world, the history of metalwork and are with a touch of folklore & myth, with a lot of viking influence.
Both here and in our Etsy shop we aspire to provide you with the best our four hands and a selection of both traditional and modern tools can create. Where we can, we try and limit our impact on our environment by improving energy efficiency, using recycled materials, building our own tools and reducing waste. We make as many of the components and tools we use ourselves and those that we cannot, we try and source from reputable suppliers, who's ethics run parallel with ours. We now use only 99.9% pure iron in our jewellery. We are registered with the London assay office. Any of our silver work can be officially hallmarked on request.
